Icecube,
I don't even know what a pen drive is, so no, I don't think that's it. I do have the following USB devices however: Canon i950 printer, Logitech wireless optical mouse, trackIR head tracking device (for gaming) that shares the same usb wire that I use to upload photos from my Sony digital cam, and a docking cradle for an older Handspring PDA. That's about it. Still trying to figure it out.

I just finised working on a Dell Dimension 4300 that had usb mouse and keyboard--with via chipset drivers---I had to flash the bios, the motherboard had usb issues--the guy had no problems until he unplugged the usb keyboard & mouse and replugged them back in--in another usb port. Windows xp has some issues with usb 1.1 vs usb2.0 not to mention another layer of conflict with via motherboards and usb--I mentioned a pen drive (usb storage device for transfering files) as a possible cause, since there are more that 1 usb ports--wierd things happen to normal systems when the usb units are plugged back in to another port--you mentiond a cannon usb printer--go to google and type in "cannon usb problems"-- and find out about some of the cannon issues.
I still think that using cable select on the hd's is going to be part of the problem--checking your motherboard maker for flash updates and review the issues solved by each update--will get you there.
