I belong to several forums that show new messages constantly. When I have read one, it then changes color so I know that I have read it. This has worked great in the past - but now, for some unknown reason, after a message has been read and changed color, it then changes back to showing as unread a little later. Sometimes within a few hours or sometimes after I shut the computer down and restart it. It never did this before - any suggestions as to where I should look to correct this problem??? I am running Windows 2000 Professional and Internet Explorer.

Are you browsing with Cache turned on? Do you have any programs that delete history and cache when you shut down your PC?

I believe I specifically went in and requested that all temporary files not be deleted when the computer shuts down, is that what you are referring to???

In 'Internet options' click on the 'settings' button under 'temporary internet files.' Try setting it to check for a newer version every visit. It may also be a problem with the site don't forget - do all the sites use the same software?

Hmm - grasping a bit here, but have you checked that your clock is set correctly? And have you tried clearing all your cookies/temporary internet files before going to the site so that they all get created afresh?

Again thanks, but the clock is right on and the cookies and temp internet files were the first to go in my quest to correct this problem. Any other thoughts??

My belief is that it is a cookie setting from thoses sites that is causing the issues. They can set the cookie to expire after a length of time, and perhaps it's too short. Because they are not true database forums, the cookies could store incorrect information which may not be retained. Try another browser, like Mozilla, and see if you still get this error. I think you will. If you do, it's all them. If not, we need to investigate this further.
