Can't dual boot with Win98 + XP

I have installed Win98SE, and now want to install XP, but I keep getting BS of D with Stop error message :
0028:C0003489 caused fatal error when called by VxD._ _ _
I have taken out hardware bit by bit, but still not making any difference.
I have taken out soundcard because XP compatability test said it couldn't recognise it.
I have come to the end of my knowledge of options, and I don't want to format and re-install Win98 again, as I have done this several times already.
WinXP starts to install, then crashes with the above Blue Screen, but it doesn't crash at the same point each time, it stops at random times.
Since the crashes by XP, it has now made Win98SE a little unstable, and now that will crash now and again.
Any help? Is this a driver problem? Or could it be because I have uninstalled my sound card?

Well all i can say to you is, windows xp wont dual boot if your just installing 2 os's you need to install a seperate program to be able to boot from one or the other so it kicks in after restart. Go to www.google.co.uk or .com and type something like "Winxp dual boot os" and your problem should be solved with the results.

Did you install Windows XP to a separate partition or hard drive?

The symptoms you describe (random crashes in 2 different OS's) normally have a couple of reasons - your computer is overheating, or you have a bad stick of memory. Personally I'd go with the second - do you have 2 sticks of RAM? If so, try taking one out & seeing if that solves the crashing

Having win98 should not cause winXP setup to crash (and it is perfectly possible to dual boot XP & 98 without a thied-party app), nor will the XP setup crashing cause win98 to become unstable. However that both of them are unstable does point to a hardware issue (as I said above )

Thanks for your help. I don't think my PC is overheating, but I will investigate the memory. I have just formatted, partitioned and installed Win98 for the umpteenth time, and had the same errors from the start. Eventually after restarting several times, I have managed to get Win98 installed, and it seems stable enough at the moment to get onto the Internet.
A typical error blue screen is:
An exceptionOE has occurred at 0028:C0001F54 in VxD(01) + 00000F54
This was called from 0028:C023050Din VxD VMM(13) 000005D5

Do you make anything of that?

I'm afraid not - those blue screen messages are only really any good for telling you which file was involved in the crash, and in your case it doesn't even seem to tell you that, sorry

Hi Restek,
Just to give you an update. I think your first theory of overheating was right. I have been taking so much of my hardware out bit by bit, trying to find the source of these crashes, I didn't have much left. I bought a new video card a couple of months ago, a Geforce FX5200, very fast and very HOT (it had it's own fan!), so I took that out and replaced it with my old Geforce2 MMX400. I had a couple of crashes at first, then none, enabling me to finish installing Win98 which I have been running for a couple of days without a crash. I am now going to take my life in my hands and try to install XP on another partition. Wish me luck, Valerie.
