Help....a message keeps popping up that says: Spyspotter...

Postby Lindalee » Wed Jan 12, 2005 2:12 am

I am assuming that this is something that attached itself to my computer when I was browsing on some hair websites last week! It pops up and says "Security Alert: Spy Software may be installed in your computer. Current Spyware Threats Location:

c:\windows\systems\32spybotter
c:\My documents and settings|all users\blater.T.Worm
c:\My documents and settings\Desktop\SoftwareKiller.dll
c:\My documents and settings\SharedDocuments\W32\Netsky
c:\Documents and Settings\Backdoor.Medias
c:\Documents and Settings\Desktop\Worm.ExploreZip
C:\Documents and Settings\Desktop\Sextracked

Unable to Remove Items

System Status: Urgent Attention
Click the OK Button to Remove Items

Then when I click on that button...it takes me to "SpySpotter"...and it's trying to get me to click on the "Open" button...and download SpySpotter.exe.

Help! I don't know if this is all just part of SpySpotter trying to get me to download something or what. Also...I don't know if it is because of this problem or not....but I tried to look in my registry files to see if there is something in there I need to delete...but when I click "Run"...and type in "regedit"....it will pop up only briefly...but then it disappears...and I am unable to go into my registry files. I went to "Hijack This"...and copied a bunch of files for someone to look at...and tell me if any of these things look suspicious. I would appreciate any help anyone can give me. I'm not too computer savy...so you need to be specific about what I need to do. Thanks a bunch. Linda

Don't download their software. The popups are a way to get you to download it. Instead, I would do the following:

Download Adaware SE Personal 1.05 from here
www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

Install and run the program. Before you do a FULL system scan, click the link that says "check for updates".

Also download AVG 7.0 from here
www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php

And finally the new version of HijackThis from here
www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html

Delete your old version of HijackThis and after you've run a full system Adaware scan and a full system AVG scan, restart your PC, and post a fresh log.

After a closer look at your log I noticed some autosearch entries that can be a pain to remove. You may want to download and run the following programs in addition to the ones I listed above:

CWShredder www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html
CCleaner www.ccleaner.com
HSRemove www.hsremove.com/
Kill2Me www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html

There's a VX2 plugin for adaware that you can download here
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Internet/P ... ugIn.shtml

Run Adaware and you will get a list of .dll files that couldn't be deleted.
Use Killbox to get rid of these
www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/killbox.php

Find the files you need to delete, and have the program delete files on reboot. Make sure you check the box that says "unregister .dll before deleting"

If you have questions, let me know. I'm kind of typing in a rush.
