I have a problem, my computer has usb 2.0 ports and they work only in safe mode. When I log into my account using the normal windows startup. None of my usb devices work; everytime I plug in any usb device it gives me, "your usb device has malfunctioned and windows cannot identify it". This is not true because these devices work in safe mode. I'm totally lost as to how windows will only recognize them in safe mode. In case your wondering my usb devices are a Gravis gamepadpro
and a MICROSOFT usb intellimouse. Please help.

Here are my specs (in case it's a hardware problem(i don't think it is)).

AMD Athlon XP 2200+ (1.8 Ghz)
MSI KT4V motherboard (w/ Via KT400)
512 MB DDR RAM
Ati Radeon 9700Pro
two 80GB Maxtor HD's
Windows XP Professional

oh yes, I forgot to tell you that this isn't some mess up with xp my computer has been formatted and gave me the same problem

First, are you logged on as the administrator?
The second thing I'd check is "Device Manager". Right Click "My Computer" / Select "Properties" / Hardware Tab / Select Device Manager. Is there a "?" or "!" beside USB?
Expand the USB tree. Highlite each item and select properties. Make sure each device and hub is currently turn on and working properly.
Third, is it possible that a "Hardware Profile" is in use, that doesn't contain the USB Hubs?

Of course i was Admin I was in safe mode. and no all the usb hubs/controllers are working fine in the device manager. it's just that when im logged into my normal windows account the usb doesn't work.
every usb device "malfunctions" i also messed up when in my first post i meant to say the second and third sentences as one sentence, sorry for the confusion. It might be the hardware profile but i have no knowlege in that subject could you give me some info?

I still don't think i'm being clear, it's my fault, when i plug in any usb device it gives the same error which basically says that the usb device malfunctioned and then it tells me to plug it in again to see if it will work. Please note that this only happens when I allow windows to startup normally(i.e. not pushing F8 at startup). If i plug it in again it still errors the same way. BUT! when i start up windows in safe mode the usb works and everything. I have no idea what it is it is so crazy.....

I didn't mean in Safe Mode. Are you logged in to Windows as an administrator or as an individual user? If a "user", then possibly your user account doesn't have a "Hardware Profile" or USB isn't enabled.
("Device Manager"=Right Click "My Computer" / Select "Properties" / Hardware Tab / Hardware Profiles)
If you're logging on as the administrator, ignore the above.
Did you check out the link in my first reply? If so, did you check to see if you've installed the WinXp USB patch?
The fact that USB works in Safe Mode pretty much states that the WinXp's generic USB drivers are not the ones being used under Normal start-up.
Have you tried updating the USB drivers?
How about going into safe mode and removing all the USB's and then reboot and let windows redetect them?

Have you got SP1 installed ? That seems to fix alot of USB 2.0 problems.

Power Management

You may not be able to use your USB mouse (or wake your computer with the USB mouse) after you suspend or hibernate your computer while you are continuously moving the USB mouse. When this problem occurs, you can still wake your computer with the power button without any loss of functionality. Generally, it is best practice not to move your USB mouse until your computer has completed the suspend or hibernate operation even after you apply this update.

Your computer automatically restarts instead of resuming from hibernation, or you receive a serious error (STOP 0x000000A in Usbport.sys).

Your USB 2.0 controller does not enter the selective suspend mode. Because of this behavior, your processor cannot enter a C3 (Clock-Stopped) power state after you disconnect a device from the USB 2.0 hub that is connected to a USB EHCI controller.

Note With the Selective Suspend feature, USB device drivers can selectively shut down their devices when they detect that the devices are idle. When you use the device again (for example, you move a USB mouse), the driver turns the device back on. This is particularly important for the power management of mobile computers.

Your USB device does not work after you resume from an S1 or S3 power state. When this behavior occurs, your computer may stop responding (hang) when it restarts.

Plug and Play

Your computer may automatically restart, or you may receive a serious error (STOP 0x0000007E in Usbhub.sys) when you use the Safely Remove Hardware utility, and then immediately remove a USB storage device that is connected directly to your computer.

Note This issue only occurs occasionally.

Hi-Speed Isochronous Devices

Your Hi-Speed USB isochronous device uses over 80 percent of the processor (CPU).

When you stream video through a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 isochronous camera, other USB devices may stop functioning or perform poorly. For example, USB speakers may stop streaming audio, or a mouse on the same hub may become choppy. If the camera streaming is stopped, your speakers may start streaming again. Otherwise, the audio may have to be restarted after the camera has stopped streaming. This behavior only occurs when all the devices are attached to the same USB 2.0 hub.

A microphone built in to your Hi-Speed USB 2.0 isochronous camera may not work. Contact your hardware vendor for additional details about this behavior.

Yes my account is admin.
I have all of the updates for my pc
If i uninstall them in safe mode when i get to windows it reinstall the same drivers.

Nope, can't post images except off the web.
Have you tried updating your drivers? Is it only the games that aren't detected on USB? What about printers or other hardware, do they work on USB?

no none of my usb devices work(mouse, gamepad, printer and scanner)

I'd un-install the games. Remove the USB's in "Device Manager". Reboot.
Now test your hardware, "one by one".
