my friends daughter was messing around with her computer and has lost the pointer to her mouse. even if she could find how to get it back, she can't click on it because she can't tell what she's pointing at. thanks for any replies.

Some basics first.
Is the mouse a PS2 (Wired) or Wireless?
If "wired", is it plugged in?
Have you rebooted the computer since this started?
Were any new programs installed right before this started?
Have you tried hitting the "Ctrl" key to show the pointer?
Does the mouse work in "Safe Mode"?
Can you try another mouse?

It could always be that the mouse itself isnt working properly.

If the mouse works in "Safe Mode" have your friend look in "Device Manager". Right Click the "My Computer" icon on the Desktop / Select "Properties" / Hardware tab / Device Manager. Expand the "Mice" entree. Select the Mouse and Right Click on it and select uninstall. Now reboot. Windows should detect the mouse and install the drivers. Let us know. brad
