remote desktop

Postby mikeUK » Sat Apr 23, 2005 6:27 pm

hi,

I wish to set up remote support so that I can access my dads computer from my house on my pc using windows xp remote desktop.

I know you can put in an IP address and access it without having to use windows messenger.

the only thing, is my dads IP address is very common, the usual 192.168.x.x

how can I change that and set up his computer and dlink firewall to port forward and be accessible from my house.

if not, is there some good software we can both use, If it works well I would use it for helping out other family members

thanks

mike

Only a machine that is running XP Pro will allow remote desktop connections made to it. You can use an XP home machine to make connections to a XP Pro machine.

On your dads router you'll need to set up port forwarding so the destination machine will be your dads IP address 192.168.X.X and the port 3389. This is the standard port that remote desktop uses (You can change this). On your dads machine right click on My computer, Remote tab and tick the remote desktop box. Set up a user that can access the computer (select remote users to add that account).

Once set up you'll need to configure your firewall to allow connections from your machine using remote desktop.

Once this is all set up run your machines remote desktop in then type your dads external ip address with the port number i.e. 82.21.36.21.98:3389

This little program is a real killer VNC

Here is a link to it. Its free

Use kratak's instructions for port forwarding, you'll have to read to see which port VNC uses--it will even work on dial up connections. You hover your mouse over the VNC icon and it give's you your ip address. Once the remote knows that and the VNC login password, he's in. (Will not work with AOL)

Users would freak out when I would remote into their system to fix something. Usually I would try to open up note pad and write them a message to leave the system alone. 9 times out of 10 they would panic and pull the power plug  before I could finish

The neat thing about this program is that you can walk them through the download over the phone and set it up with little effort

That's a funny story Icecube.

I believe VNC uses port 5900. :)
