I want to reformat my whole hard drive, but I want to backup certain programs and files. is there a way i can do this without having to burn everything to disk?

What I like to do is create a small partition on my system using something like Partition Magic and move all the files I want to save to that partition, then reformat making sure I delete the right partition.
