duplicating word documents????

Postby keybowvio » Tue Jul 25, 2006 2:40 pm

i don't know why this is happening, but whenever i open a word document, another icon (or file, if its not on the desktop) appears in the folder, it appears like: ~$name.doc
also, when i close the document, the new ~$ duplicate of it dissapears.
is this normal, or could i of somehow gotten infected with a virus of some type?
i see no other symptoms of being infected with a virus, and it is a very new machine, about a year old, and just reformatted the HD
.the other thing that keeps me wondering is how it could of gotten infected- it doesn't even have an internet connection, although after the HD got reformatted, i had to put some freeware back on it, not that i redownloaded any freeware, but just that i took programs off of the computer that i'm using right now to type this, wich, in my oppinion anyway, Must have a virus (its scary slow, even though it is 5+ years old, no comp goes this slow w/o a virus). is it possible to transfer them by copying programs and files onto cd, then putting those programs and files on another computer?

MS word always uses a temp file when a document is open.
That is what you are seeing just a temp file used by word nothing else.
You have to show hidden files to be able to see these temp files.

It is possible to transfer a virus through the means you described but it would still have to be activated / installed.

since i've already started a post, i mine as well see if you can give me a reason for why this is happening: (take a look at the pic)

http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/keybowvio ... 8bcre2.jpg

why is there a white box around the text? i have not clicked on or selected any of the icons, that is there natural state, instead of just having the text over the background.

i have looked all over for an option to turn this off, but have not found one.

Is this the windows 98 system?

If so that is how it is by default.
There are programs out there that can clear the background of the text.
But it's been so long I don't remember their names any more

I found it:
Start > control panel > System > Advanced tab > Performance section > settings button >
Visual affects tab > scroll down and put a check next to “Use drop shadows for icon labels on desktop”
Click apply click OK that should do it :)
