Hi all,

Having problems with my laptop. I am unable to open and adjust the power options to extend the time before the laptop goes into hibernation. This includes accessing it from the taskbar, the Control Panel and via the Power button in the screensaver settings. I double click on each or open menu but nothing opens up.

Also searched and found controlcfg in system32 but was the same result. Real pain and means that unable to leave the laptop for more than couple of minutes before it goes into hibernation.

Any ideas on how to fix this problem would be much appreciated.

You can set the hibernation time out limit through the command box but you need to know the scheme name.

To get the scheme name:
Start > Run type cmd and press enter
Now type powercfg /list and press enter
This will list the name of the scheme that you are currently using once you have that name you can set the time out.

For the DC scheme it would be:
Start > Run type cmd and press enter
Now type
powercfg /change (schemename)/monitor-timeout-dc 15

For the AC scheme it would be:
Start > Run type cmd and press enter
next type
type powercfg /change (schemename)/monitor-timeout-ac 15

The 15 would be 15 minutes

If this is not clear enough you can bring up the power config help by;
Start > Run type cmd and press enter
Next type:
powercfg /? and press enter

Just as a lark, some laptops builders have disabled the windows hibernate and energy settings.

You might need to use their program to adjust the settings. Check your operating manual
