Black screen on boot.

Hello everyone i just got a new monitor yesterday for my birthday so i closed my pc hooked it all up everything boots i see the gateway logo i see the option to boot tinto vista or xp i see the loading bar at startup for vista. But right after that the screen goes black i can still hear the startup sound and can still click things in the back but the screen is all black as if my monitor had no signal. At first i thought it was the monitor so i unplug it pop in the old crt that worked 10 min ago and same problem loads and goes black after load bar when i go into safe mode it works and everything works 100% when i boot into xp so it seems to be something with vista. I don't remember installing any new drivers or windows update i just reset my pc and black screen. Now i can't use my new 22 inch in vista on my birthday.

Edit - Would like to add that i tried booting with the last known good configuration option.

It sounds like your resolution is set to something incompatable with your monitors.

Here is a registry fix you can do to set it. You must run it in Safe Mode since that is all you can see. Be very carefull when editing the registry.

Start---->Run--->regedit

Open:
My Computer--->HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG--->System--->CurrentControlSet--->Control--->VIDEO--->(expand all until
you see 'Monitor')

Locate:

DefaultSetting.XResolution REG_DWORD
DefaultSetting.YResolution REG_DWORD


Explanation: The data is stored as a hex value. 0x00000400 = 1024(base 10/decimal)
0x00000300 = 768 (base 10/decimal)

To change the default resolution:

1) Double-click DefaultSetting.XResolution
2) Click Modify
3) In the window that opens, change the 400 to 320 [which is equal to 800 in base 10]
4) Click ok.

1) Double-click DefaultSetting.YResolution
2) Click Modify
3) In the window that opens, change the 300 to 258 [base 10 for 600]
4) Click ok.

Exit Registry Editor and restart your computer.
The default setting should now be 800x600.

Thanks for the tip. But before i had the chance to try it i uninstalled my video drivers in safe mode and reinstalled them and it worked.
