saving your settings takes ages in XP

Hi,

For a while now, when I shutdown my PC it gets to 'saving your settings' and can take up to 2 minutes before it gets to 'shutting down'.

I had a look online and found something that said to look in the event viewer. In the application log there are multiple warnings time stamped when I've shut down my PC.

the log says:
'Windows saved user Mypcname\Myname registry while an application or service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no longer in use.

This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account.'

There was a link in the log that took me .

So it looks like some program won't close. even so I don't know what it would be :S

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Hi Psymon

Here is a link to a Microsoft program I use at work a lot.

This should cure that problem.

On XP you have two options when quiting, Log off or Shutdown. If you pick shutdown and hit the scroll button the option log-off is available. The two log-offs are not quite the same. Log-off leaves you still on the machine. Shutdown-->log-off removes you from the machine memory.

In a network setting with domains, either log-off should work the same and kill the user, I've found though that they don't. This program "Microsoft User Hive Cleanup Service" seems to get rid of the errors in event viewer

Thanks for that icecube :)

"The following handles opened in user profile hive PC\ME are preventing the profile from unloading:

MsMpEng.exe (1148)
HKCU (0x2c4)
HKCU\Software\Classes (0x6e0)"

which is apparently windows defender.
gotta love M$

Also, turning the report function off makes 'saving your settings' last for less than a second

Many thanks icecube :)
