Well I’ve been busy recently working full time at the cinema and seeing as its been Christmas and new year’s it’s been busy. I decided to treat myself to a new toy.
I bought myself a netbook
Couple reasons why, firstly I didn’t want a laptop unless it was going to be an insanely good one considering that I have a good pc. So I started looking at smaller/fun netbooks to play with.
I went with a Sony Vaio W series netbook in white
It came with windows seven which I was keen to try out first hand. So far, it was lovely. The only problem I had was with the edition that came on the netbook. It was windows Seven Starter edition, which is only out on netbooks and offers less features. Needless to say for a little net book it was fine, but I have had the opportunity to upgrade the os to windows seven home premium and it’s much nicer. A lot lot nicer. Starter edition wouldn’t even let me change the desktop background without using 3rd party software. But nevertheless it was nice.
Home premium just seems to have some more features like previewing stuff before you full screen and such.
The netbook was very nice looking, which was another buying point for me. If I’m going to be using this out and about (even if it’s just for at work or on holidays) I do want it to look nice.
It came with the larger battery, so it protrudes from the bottom slightly but when on a table it’s nicer as its angles up more. It also offers twice the life of a normal one which is more important. About 7 hours of unplugged use, which is just insane if u ask me considering laptops only last a matter of hours.
It has a 10.1" display rather than a smaller size, and it is in widescreen 16:9 so watching my DVD rips on it is really awesome. Resolution of 1366 x 768 which just really is insane for this little piece of kit. A hd screen on a small sexy looking netbook is really what I wanted.
It has a 250 gig hard drive as opposed to a smaller 160 gig one that cheaper netbooks have.
The processor isn’t anything amazingly quick, but it is a low power consumption one so that's good for longer battery.
It comes with 1 gig of ram, but I have already ordered a 2gig stick from ebuyer which will be here any day. I’ve read guides on how to change it, as it’s not easy but I think it should be a breeze, and let’s face it two gigs is much better than one. : D that cost me 35 pounds for a 2gig ram stick, which I am ok with. On the manufactures website it states that its 1 gig max, but I’ve been led to believe differently by lots of reading. I think because the ram slot is located under the keyboard that it’s just not user friendly so that’s why they say it can’t be upgraded.
It has a lil webcam which is always fun.
Finally, the keyboard is almost full sized, so if thought it would be much easier for typing on, which it really is. Im writing all this sat on my bed with the netbook on my lap and havigng no trouble at all.
Basically, im pretty happy with it
Its only a little toy for me to play with and go online with, take on holiday etc.
It also has Bluetooth, and I’m getting a new phone contract in April which I will make sure comes with unlimited internet, as I’ve learned (prior to purchase) that you can connect your phone via Bluetooth and use its mobile internet out and about.
Even cooler, I can use my current Sony Ericson phone connected to this as a media remote, a projector remote, a mouse pointer, I can play music thru the netbook, I can even ring people thru the netbook's speaker and mic without taking my phone out of my pocket.
All in all it cost me a small fortune for what it is, considering you can purchase netbooks from as little as 150 pounds, this cost me 370 pounds + 20 quid on a carry case, not cheap. Still, I’m very impressed. I’ve already loaded on Microsoft office 2007 and I’m just going to use avg free as I’m not really using this for anything important.

I’m aware that netbooks won’t be to everyone’s liking, but this thing is so good looking and quick and handy I’m just happy as Larry (or Lawrence!)
