so it does not even reach the OS?

a couple things come to mind. check to make sure that all your fans are still working. most likely its just that your comp is old, its wearing down and cant perform as well as it used to. If it wont start up after it gets hot, but runs normally when its cool then it is probably not a serious hardware issue.

Nope, does not even reach the OS, in fact, I don't even hear any sounds from the harddrives..

If I hear some flickering from the harddrives when the Aptiva screen goes away, I'm happy because then it made it :P

i ve got a few suggestions for you. first, check your
C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR USERNAME\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

and cut everything out of it to a temp folder somewere else. this will stop programs that start up automatically when windows starts. I doubt this will help any, because you never actually load the OS, but its worth a try and at the elast will improve your startup time. if there are programs there u want to have start automatically, just put them back in the folder.

after doing a lot of research (i spent over an hour because i got intested) it seems that several ppl have had problems with their aptiva comps starting up. here are a few links to other ppl who have had similar problems:

as you can see, several ppl have had the same problem as you, and the problem keeps getting worse. from what ive read, it is a power supply problem. i think your best bet would be to buy a new power supply, as this seemed to fix the problem for several people. if you do opt to take this route, make sure you dont just buy the first PS you see. make sure that what you buy is compatable with what you have now. the best way to do this is go to IBM website, find your computer model, and copy down the specs of your PS and connecting cables. then you can compare those specs with the ones of the new power supply you intend to buy. dont be afraid to contact the vender and ask if the PS is compatable. it is very important that you find one that is compatable, and this is especially true for older and brand name computers. if you are having trouble finding a compatable one, post here again, or you can email me personally if you arent getting any help (which i doubt, the people here are very good at what they do from what i have seen so far).

my final suggestion: dont buy any more IBM computers. i have always thought they were crap, and from what ive read today i was more or less accurate. its not just power supply problems people are having, i have read about numerous other problems as well.

saving a 4 year old computer for less than 80$ is probably reasonable, but any more than that and you are wasting your money, because they only sell for a bit more than that, so if this repair is gonna cost you alot, just get yourself a new one. your best bet is to build your own, but if you must buy brand name, go for dell. they dont rip you off to bad, and occasionally actually have a decent deal, plus their computers are reliable and they have good tech support.

im sorry for making you read so much, but if it fixes your problem it will have been worth it. :)
