Help Needed!

Postby krazykat » Thu Jul 29, 2004 1:43 am

Ok, here's my problem.
I have an emachine computer, model number W2060, with a 2000+AMD Athlon XP processor, 256MB DDR ram, and it had a 60 gb hard drive.
Well, the hard drive went belly up, went to emachine site, and ordered a 120gb upgrade.
Well, it came in on Tuesday, and since Tuesday, I still have not been able to get it to do anything?
I installed it into the slot, partitioned it, formatted it, and loaded the recovery disks, but it's still not functioning.
The hard drive is a western digital, which states on the cover, to remove jumper, to set as master disk, which i did.
I have been through this process with this critter several times over, and am now desparate!
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thankd

Did you try with the jumper set as master? I know what you stated it said on the cover.....

HI, and yes, i have tried it several ways, with no luck. according to the drive itself, master is no jumper at all.

I believe liljim is correct.. the recovery disk you have will probably be specifically for the 60gb drive that came with the machine.. and XP (as all versions of NT) is particularly fussy about the drive it lives on suddenly transforming itself into a different one..

If you get a blue screen on bootup.. or if the system tries to log in.. but then kicks straight back out again.. or gets caught up in a never ending loop before loading the desktop.. this is likely to be the problem..

also.. has any other hardware changed?? such as the video card??

try booting into safe mode.. see if this works..

please report back with any findings/error messages/different problems..

Hi all!
It's me again, with a bit more time on my hands now, to better explain.
The recovery disks are specific for this model. They contain the operating system ( Windows XP Home Edition), and a complete backup of the software that was preinstalled on the PC at the factory.
I have done this process before, on Compaq, Dell, and HP machines, but this is the first time it failed, and I have no idea as to why?
The recovery disks are made to completely erase everything on a hard drive, and reinstall it to factory condition, and I have used them before on the old hard drive, and they worked fine.
Here's what happens. I use fdisk to partition the drive, then format it. Before shutting down, I place the cd in the computer.
Then upon startup, the cd takes over, loading all the software back into the hard drive.( there are 2 cd's for this process, and both load in)
After the second cd is done, it automatly reboots, to start up windows, but in this case, it doesn't? It goes to a start up screen, asking if i want safe mode, normal startup, safe mode with command prompt, or use last known configuration that worked. If i choose any of the safe modes, it starts loading up all the drivers, listing them as it goes, then just stops, nothing else happens. If i tell it to start windows normally, it completely lock's up.
I'm at a total loss as to what could be wrong here?
Thanks Again!

As I said before.. it is possible that the installation contained on the disks was specific to the 60GB drive you had in previously.. and as I mentioned.. all versions of Windows NT (NT, 2000 and XP) can be very funny when the hard drive suddenly changes.. it's not a bug.. it's a feature (according to Microsoft anyway).

Also.. I have known systems where, before the recovery CD can be applied to a new hard drive, a hidden partition must be created by an engineer disk. This is done by the likes of Packard Bell amongst others to ensure that people don't use third party maintenance/repair options..

Your other option.. as has already been mentioned, is to obtain an OEM/Retail windows XP Home CD, and install the operating system from scratch..
