DEAD PC!!! HELP!!!

Postby JROK » Thu Aug 26, 2004 9:02 pm

I was using my computer the other then all of a sudden it just shut off. I tried to turn it back on but it wouldn't work. It turns on but won't boot up. All the fans the will run and the mobo lights come on, but it wont boot. I've tried unhooking all my drives and extra PCI cards, but still nothing. I've also reset the CMOS by changing the jumper and also I removed the battery for a while. It still wont boot up. I know my graphics card works, so probably its either my mobo or cpu.

I think I hear what is supposed to be a beep from my internal speaker. (it doesnt sound like a beep, but it might just be the quality of my speaker)
What does that mean if theres a beep??

I dont have an extra mobo or cpu laying around to test it. What else can I do??

hello jrok Image

First what I would do would be to try another monitor.
Secondly, if the extra cpu you have is compatible I would try it.

The beep your hearing may be the post which what its suppose to do.
How do you know your graphic card works if your not getting anything on your monitor? Just curious ...
You say your mobo lights come on? Please explain what you mean. Are you looking inside the case or are you seeing your hard drive light come on in the front of the case?

All the fans run?? You mean the power supply fan and the cpu fan and any other internal case fans?

yoo geekgirl

First of all, I know my graphics card works because i tried it in another computer I have. However, this computer runs on an intel processor so I can't interchange the mobo or cpu with my pc. Also, I used the same monitor that was with my dead pc with the test pc, which worked.

On my mobo itself there are 3 lights in a row. When I turn the pc on 2 of the 3 come on. One comes on for a split second then shuts off. I dont know what these lights mean.

And when I say all the fans are running, I mean ALL the fans (the 2 two case fans, the cpu fan, the psu fan, and graphics card fan).

I think you read my post wrong, I DO NOT have an extra processor lying around

Thanks for your help[/b]

Try swaping out the power supply. Just because the fans are working, doesn't necessarily mean the P/S is ok. Thats what I would check first. If this happened during a thunder storm with the modem connected-- well---lets not go there!

I would say check memory, NIC, or any other PCI devices.
Begin by removing one PCI device at a time.
Keep doing so until you get down to just your video card.
If this does not help, then Check your RAM.
Again remove one stick at a time, until you have removed all sticks.
Once you have done this, put in a stick that you know for sure is working. Preferably from a working PC. That way you don't buy one for nothing.

These steps are just a few in the process of elimination.

Check for the obvious first.

It is a fact that a faulty PCI device will cause you to have this problem. So don't rule out any possibilities.

Power Supply and Hard drive are usually last resort.

I'd agree with the others - you seem to have ruled out everything non-essential which leaves you with PSU, CPU and motherboard. Unfortunately the only way to diagnose problems with these it to swap them out for know working components. If you don't have any spare lying around you may be best taking it to a shop where they can do this.
