Upgrading my processor

Postby Dave_Lethal » Tue Dec 28, 2004 8:08 pm

Hello all.

I desperately need a new processor for my PC, this 700 mhz Celeron just isn't cutting it. I've never put in a processor before, and there's a few things I need to know.

First of all, I have a Micron PC...here are my specs.
Computer:
Operating System Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
OS Service Pack Service Pack 2
Internet Explorer 6.0.2900.2180 (IE 6.0 SP2)
DirectX 4.09.00.0904 (DirectX 9.0c)
Computer Name DAVID
User Name default

Motherboard:
CPU Type Intel Celeron II, 700 MHz (10.5 x 67)
Motherboard Name GVC DR742E (3 PCI, 1 AMR, 2 DIMM, Audio, Video)
Motherboard Chipset Intel Whitney i810E
System Memory 384 MB (SDRAM)
BIOS Type AMI (06/09/00)
Communication Port Communications Port (COM1)
Communication Port ECP Printer Port (LPT1)

If you need more specs, let me know.

Is there a certain type of processor I need? I was thinking of an Intel Pentium 4, but I'm not sure if I just buy a Pentium 4 if it will fit right into my PC and work fine.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

No.. a P4 will not just slot into that board.. that board as far as I can tell.. supports only Celeron/copeprmine based proscessors..

to be honest.. it's rather an old board.. and you would probably be better buying a new mobo/cpu combo (possibly with some extra memory also..) of course.. that depends on your budget.. if you do have to stick with that mobo.. let us know.. and we'll research the fastest cpu you can have in there..

:)

The limit is 512, according to the Geek Squad at Best Buy. I already have a 128 mb DDR video card, the readon 9600.

So if I need another 256 to replace the 128.

And I can get a Pentium 3 for 80 bucks you say?

I think I may have been confused...

go to this link for a processor

I was wrong on the price-- the new listing for a PIII 1000 is $28.

Sorry about the confusion, you stated that you had 384 meg of ram. I belive thats a two slot board so you have a 256 and a 128 filling both slots.. I was recomending that you pull the 128 and put in a 256

I'm running a PIII 1000 with 1 gig of ram and a 128 DDR video card and its running at half the speed of my new PIV 2.4 512 gig system.---I wasn't very impressed with the added speed of my new system. I decided to let my wife have it for her machine. It just wasn't worth the effort to reinstall all of my software.

This is a personal opinion, but someone else might agree, the Pentium 4 chips are nothing more than a suped up PIII.

Well...I don't know anything about the latest BIOS flash because I didn't install it. I'm not doing a new build, I just want to put a faster processor in my current machine. I know it was switched already from a Pentium II to a Celeron II, but I want to put at least a 1 gig pentium III in it. I desperately need a faster processor, but I have no clue which one to buy. The 20 dollar Pentium III you showed me is at the top of my list, but I have no clue if it will work with my current system.
