Amber Light

:?: My PC won't start at all! I attempted a Memory upgrade and after several tries gave it up and reinserted the old 215 mb Ram Chip. Now the power on light is amber and the only device that shows a green light is the DVD-ROM. I have an ASUS A7N266-C motherboard with an Athlon 1.4ghz processor. The memory speed may have been issue as the DIMM memory I tried to place into the memory was 2700 and the other RAM was 2100. What is the meaning of the Amber lights on the front of the case by the power switch? Why does the machine refuse to boot up?

Welcome to PCTech you may need to clear the cmos and make sure everything (ram, video card, sound) is seated all the way. There is a jumper usually located next to the cmos battery (overgrown watch battery). The jumper should be marked, most of the time it will say clear and normal on the board at the base of the jumper. Set it to clear and leave it for 10 seconds, place it back to normal and try to power up again.

Do you get any beeps?

I hadn't thought of that one. I did reset or clear the cmos but didn't know that I could set it back to normal afterwards. I suppose you wouldn't know the reason for the PC doing this in the first place.

I dont exactly know the reason your computer done this but i have my own theory. "Most" of the time a bios is set to auto-detect new hardware, including memory. Its possible that the memory you tried wasnt compatable and your bios tried to adjust to it as best as it could. The settings it changed to wasnt compatable with new or old memory thus stopping you from booting with either. I may be way off, sometimes things just dont want to work
