F keys.

All computer hardware support

F keys.

Postby venney » Fri Dec 30, 2005 4:41 pm

Hello, my keyboard is a Logitech one, and it has these F keys, so when you press an F key (example F1) it opens an email or something.
Does anyone know how to turn these off? I just want them as normal, I’ve looked all in the keyboard options, cant find how to disable, and none of the buttons on the keyboard seem to disable it.
It’s a real pain because when I’m playing a game the F keys don’t work now, this wasn’t a problem before and I don’t know why its started doing it now.

Thanks
Venney

Nowadays keyboards come with a million extra "multi-media" buttons to make life easier. They do things like control volume and cd players and so on.
Microsoft and Logitech both sell keyboards that by default set the F-keys to do strange useless things like send emails and open the My Documents folders.
To get standards F-key functionality you have to press a NEW key called "F-Lock".
Some folks have figured out that by hacking the registry you can set this key to be on by default but this only works for Microsoft keyboards. Logitech users have had to suffer. Until now. Here's how to eliminate this crappy feature and get your F-Keys back without hacking your reg.

Click the iTouch icon in your task tray on the bottom right and go to the F-Keys tab.
Double click the first key (F1), a dialog pops up.
Click the dropdown and select "Keypress" NOT "Transparent Passthrough" from the list.
If it's not there, make sure you've updated your iTouch software from Logitech.
In the name field enter something like "myF1" and in the keypress field press the F1 key (with F-Lock on).
Click ok.
Your F1 key is now F1 whether F-lock is pressed or not!!! Repeat for the other keys and enjoy.

The only problem is that this still doesn't support things like Alt+F4 and other F-combos. The pass-through is still a little opaque.

I have to say that I go out of my way to find the cheapest simplest keyboards with out any extra buttons....

I never have any problems with em except they have a wire....

Now, if I could find a wireless KB without all the extra stuff... that would be heaven...

Good on ya and tnks for the info Dave....
