CD R/RW Problems

Postby RedBaron » Wed May 31, 2006 3:12 am

I have an HP xt948 with Phillips CCC4851 cd drive. Anytime I put in a cd of any type, or just open the cd door, it attempts to read/play but locks up the computer. Then the drive door will not open until i reboot. I've disconnected the drive, rebooted, shutdown, reconnected, rebooted to no avail. Also, deleted the drive at the device manager, then rebooted, to no avail. Any help would be appreciated.

This sounds like a problem I had with an old CD-RW drive. If I put in certain CDs it would do the auto run, slow down, then do the auto run again, loop untill crash. The pc would freeze up due to all the apps loaded up trying to access the CD drive but of course being unable to as it kept slowing down and loading a new auto run.
I managed to fix it by downloading a newer driver from the official website.
Try that and if that doesnt work then you might be better off getting a new drive. They are really cheap theses days. You could even get a drive that writes to DVD and CD for not much more.
I feel quite bad now, this is the 2nd person asking for help with their optical drive and I've said to get a new one.

I tried to look on the phillips website for the driver for you but I can't find the CD drive. I got as far as a page giving a list of CD drives phillips do but the one you mentioned wasn't there.
I wanted to put the URL but it was very big. http://www.philips.co.uk/index.html Is the homepage is you live in the UK. Go "Contact & support" in the top right corner. Then "more" under "moniters & PC peripherals". You should be able to work out the rest.
Theres a link that tells you how to identify your drive if you need it.
good luck :)

Thanks, Pysmon. I'll try the driver update first and if that don't work, I'll change the drive. I appreciate your help. Thanks
