I encourage everyone to build or buy a custom machine but if your going to build it with no experience be careful first and patient second. I always prefer AMD processors, Asus motherboards with Nvidia chipsets and Nvidia graphics. They have always been reliable and powerful and less expensive to build.

Start with a budget and know that you will probably cross it

Budget will be more important than anything, once you have a number to work with you can decide what will give you more bang for your buck.

Cpu : Intel E6700
Mobo : Asus P5B Deluxe Wifi-ap
Heatsink : Artic cooling 7 Freezer Pro
Ram : A-Data Vitesta ddr2 100+
Case : Antec p180
Hard disk : Hitachi Deskstar T7K250 x2
Graphics : Asus Geforce 8800 GTX
Sound : Creative Sound Blaster X-FI Xtreme
PSU: Antec Truepower Trio TP3-650

Well thats what i would buy you could always swap the e6700 for a e6600 and the hardisc to a wd raptor But it would play everything at max and overclock lots too, even more so with water cooling
AMD 3700 64 San Diego Core 2.2 Ghz
ASROCK 939Dual-SATA2
2 gig giel ddr 400
Nvidia 6800gt
Audigy zs2
Maxtor 160gb 16mb Cache
Samsung sata 80gb
