hi new to the board having problems getting a pci card to work and know that both slot and card work just not together. already have a usb/ieee card in one slot but need extra ieee ports on top of what i got. any ideas?

Throw away the second USB card. Make sure the one that is in a slot is USB 2.0 The only reason to have a USB 2.0 card in an older system would be to upgrade your motherboard from USB 1.0 which is 40 times slower.

You can plug in 127 USB devices into one USB port with a USB hub. If you are hooking up more than 4 USB devices get a hub that has an external power supply. Your motherboard will only supply enough amps to power 4 devices.

So if you already have USB 2.0 on your motherboard, you don't also need one in a PCI slot. Its overkill.

One thing to remember each different port you plug an item into is considered a new install. So if you have 4 USB ports, you could install your printer 4 times. Your computer thinks that you have 4 printers and this can waste resources. Try to use the same plugin for the item each time.

Im not sure what all you have plugged in, but if you have XP, I would go into device manager and remove all of the USB stuff and then go up to the top and select search for new hardware. This might free up some IRQ's. You might be prompted for the drivers disks, but the files already reside on the disk in the windows directory or the system32 directory.

Fire wire is a seperate issue. If you bought a combo card with firewire and USB it isn't going to hurt anything. Having a few extra USB ports is no big deal, the real issue is the Motherboard supports .2 amps total draw and USB devices are rated at .05 amps so you have some limitations as to what all you can plug in without supplying some external power.
