Pc wont boot!!

Hello, i don’t remember the last time i made a post about a real problem, but this is a major one!!
So today in the post i received 2 new sticks of ram (2gb) and a new 500gb hdd.
My Graphics card was in the way of the hdd's so i took that out, then the hdd cage, and installed my new hard drive. Then i put the cage back and plugged both hard drives in.
I then removed my 2 sticks of ram, putting the 2 new ones in.
I then put my graphics card back in the slot, turned the pc on, and nothing. Not even the beep. Litrally power was going to everything, my grapihcs card fan was on, i could open and close the cd tray, not nothing on screen. No signal from the graphics card. So i put the old ram back in, unplugged the new hard drive, and again nothing. So i went up in the loft, fetched the old graphics card out, wacked that in, and still nothing.
I invited a friend over to see if he had any ideas, we tried everything for a second time, nothing was working at all. Even tried a different monitor.
So we decided to take the mobos battery out, gave everything a good blow so there was no dust, and replaced the battery.
Now when i turn the pc on, i get a Beep, pause of about 3 seconds, and then another beep etc etc.

What do i do??!!! Is my mother board somehow broken? What steps should i take now before taking the pc to a repair shop? If the motherboard is broken, im more inclined on buying a new mother board and new case, and swapping everything over. (as i have all fairly new components except the cpu, which i could upgrade later).
Im going back to Cheltenham (uni) saturday, so i kind of need a pc for then lol, so i need to sort this as quickly and painlessly as possible.

small update

i looked on the msi website, and i think its my ram slots.

No Post - Diagnostic codes

Verify POST beep codes
Continues beeps or 1long 2short beeps = possible memory error
• Try re-seating memory or test with different memory
1long 2short or 8short beeps = possible video card problem
• Try re-seating video card, test system with known good video card
High/Low tone (siren sound)= CPU is overheating.
• Verify that CPU heatsink is properly installed and power connected


ive tried only using 1 of my new ram sticks in the ram, leaving the other 1 empty, and then the same but oppisit, and still get the same beep. im under the impression my ram slot may be damaged?

Hi Venny

Try resetting the CMOS. There should be a three pronged connector close to the battery labled CMOS. If the clip is on 1 and 2 place it on 2 and 3 and then back to 1 and 2. This will clear it. You'll need to set the date again.

I believe that you have video on the Motherboard. This should get it to boot to the video on board.

I think that when you put in the second card it disables the onboard video. I'm thinking (guessing) that changing that card again might be confusing the CMOS, its looking for card two not card 3.

Hello. thanks for your reply icecube, i did what you said, but there was no signal cumming from the onboard video (for some reason, it had a plastic cover over it saying do not remove, i removed it and tried it and no luck). so i tried my graohics card again, and the beeping started again.

i tried it again, monitor plugged in to onboard video, did the bridge thing, but nothing happens. pcs power boots up, fans etc, but nothing else, nothing on screen. theres also no beep like there usually is when u start a pc.

p.s. my monitor recognises that the cable is plugged in, but says no input signal, or something to that affect

you don't need to use the onboard video, clear the cmos and put in the new card and boot up to the new card. If its beeping with the new card then its probably bad or the wrong voltage for the MB. I'm not sure what cards you are using. some AGP's are 1.5 volt and some are 3 volts and they don't both work.

The beeping is probably a bad video card --see if the old card works after a clear cmos. Taking the battery out does not clear the cmos.

I think that you will have to get the old card working first, and then go into the Operating System and set the video card to generic. see if you can get that far.

It isn't your motherboard, unless you had a capacator that you knocked over on the equipment install. Check the caps they should all be solid in place and not leaking.

Unplug the HD and the Floppy and see if it will boot. I'm thinking that maybe the new memory is goofy, but that doesn't make sense if the fans turn on.

My best guess is that the CMOS reset switch is not the one that you are fiddling with. Does the three pin clip next to the battery say CMOS on it?

Try booting with the cmos clip in the wrong position and see if that does anything.

Try another power supply. If you have another computer, you don't even need to extract it. pull the plugs on the good one and drag it close to the bad one and hook it up (it's a tight fit) and see if it boots. You don't need to hook up the hard drive and floppy, you just want to see it post.

There is only two other things I can think of. Unplug all fans hooked up to the motherboard except the cpu fan and see if it boots.

Check for crushed pins on the motherboard where the IDE cables connect, also a loose screw floating around could give you problems expecially if lodged under the MB

i tried the old psu and no lucky. i guess im taking it to a shop
