Can't install video drivers

Ive been trying out various driver releases for my Radeon x800 card in order to play a particular video game. I got through a few drivers by trying one, uninstalling then trying another but I now find I can't install any at all. I've uninstalled the drivers, removed the card from the device list and restarted my pc. The auto detect kicks in, finds my card and then asks for drivers. As I dont actually have the driver file itself but instead run the install program that I downloaded from the card makers website. After the program has done its thing I get a little message bubble appear in Windows telling me my card is not installed and my may not work not work properly. Ive retried several times but still have the same problem. Maybe if I could some how get how of just the driver file I could point windows to it, I just dont know. Any suggestions?

do you have an option to roll back drivers?

I really suggest that the newest drivers available are the ones you focus on getting to. Normally they contain everything the older ones do with the addition of recent bug fixes and such. What game are you having problems with?

Its Portal. Its a bit of a contentious subject, some people are saying my card can't handle it but there are some that have actually got it running with the same card as mine.

Do you have any ATI software left in add/remove programs?

Reinstall the newest drivers knowing that its going to say its not properly installed. Once its all done, reboot and go in the device manager and check the video driver version and date.

After a little searching, I found that the X800 supports up to direct X 9.0b. Most games actually use 9.0c. I would expect portal to work but could understand if it couldn't due to the difference in libraries and capability. You may have to enter something into the console to force the game to run at a lower Direct X level. I think it's something like .
Even so, first things first, hope you sort our your driver problem.

May many for the info. Ive actually now given up trying and will probably upgrade my card soon anyway. An expensive 'fix' but at least it will keep my current setup 'alive' for a little longer!
