I myself don't use them for working on computers and I spent years in the electronics design and manufacturing industry.
What I do is ground the system case (ground wire with alligator clip) and then I touch a case screw before I touch anything else.
That will safely discharge any static you may have generated, if you move your feet retouch a screw.
Static mats will only work if your shoes and socks are conductive, tennis shoes are not conductive
Warning do not use magnetized screwdrivers, you can inadvertently change the polarization of some small electrical components if you touch them with a magnet!
