failing hard drive

Postby kenneylapointe » Sun Mar 07, 2010 11:03 am

last night my pc crashed. when I attempted a reboot, the hard drive just made a clicking noise and would not start. The system stated that no hard drive was detected. In desperation, I removed the drive, tapped lightly on the casing, reinstaled it and was amazed when it worked. Problem is how long until it fails completly? Can I transfer the operating system and all software (don't care about personel files) to a new hard drive?

not long and yes..

if it started clicking, replace it now or at least back up any data that you dont want to lose because its only a matter of time. Theres several disk cloning programs out there that will basically copy/clone your drive and place it onto another exactly as is. should do the trick.

Was given wrong information(outsourced overseas phone support). Via sony e-mail support, found that my homemade system recovery disks would install my system on a NEW HD. (providing the specs of old and new drives matched)

i've had several drives show this clicking symptom just before failing completely.
I would get your important data off it asap!
