PSU Failure?

Postby Un4g1v3n » Thu May 13, 2004 1:09 am

Ok.

I plug in the power cord, and pressed the power button, and nothing happened. So, I took the computer apart to see what could be wrong.
It looked like everything was ok.

So I plug the cord back in, and I hear a high pitched noise. It doesnt stop until I unplug the cord. I was wondering if power was even getting to the motherboard, so I hooked up an LED. I plugged the cord in (again) and the LED lit up, signifying that yes, there's power going through the board.

What I don't understand, is why the damn thing won't start. There's power going from the PSU to the motherboard, but it won't start. It was working yesterday, so I know the voltage is about adequate.

No new hardware has been added, or taken off.

What gets me is that the PSU makes a high pitched noise. I've never heard it do that before.

Any answers? All the help is appriciated.

Certainly sounds like the PSU...
Do have another PSU you can try?
If not you can unplug everything from MO,then plug in the power
supply.

Now use a volt meter to see what the PSU is spitting out.
Obviously the needle will move but if its cooked...just a little.

PS: just stick the probes from the meter into each plug making sure you
get it in each hole in the plug as one in each is a ground so there will be no reading.
