Compaq Presario Boot Problem

Postby jolted88 » Tue Jul 06, 2004 1:57 am

Hello: I'm working on this Compaq Presario 7360  for my wifes friend. The problem is that it will not boot. I start the computer and all I get is a red compaq logo followed by what appears to be a memory check (0 to 56 mb ok) it only has 1 stick of, I believe 64mb. So I proceeded to try another hard drive, ide cable, power supply, cleared the cmos, removed the cmos battery for 24 hours (overnight) and reinstalled it and removed all pci devices. I was thinking that maybe my problem lies within the memory stick but I do not have any memory lying around other than whats in my other pc's. Unless anyone has something else to add I will pull a stick out of my pc and try it in this compaq.. Thanks

Have you tried using the Compaq Restore disc?
Compaqs are very finiky to work on...
Boot up with just the HDD and the 1 stick of memory and see where it takes you.
To get into the BIOS press F8 or F10....just keep tapping key during boot,it's right around the Compaq logo screen, see if the HDD is detected in the BIOS.

You don't mention your Operating System so I'm assuming it's Win98.
I would add more mem as well,64MB of Ram is not enough memory....

Compaq is very picky as to the ram it will run on.I strongly going to a site like crucial.com and use the memory selector to get the right ram for that machine,if in fact you decide to get any at all.Using the ram from another machine(unless its also a compaq) wont get you very far.

Is it giving you an error or just freezing?

I'll get the restore disk and try it. I have tried tapping the heck out of the f10 button, but I will try the f8. The hdd does not appear to be detected as I have no hdd light activity. There are no errors or abnormal beeps it just runs the memory check and stays there. Also below the mem check there is a short white line that flashes. The os is win98. Thanks for the tip on the memory liljim. I did try to boot with just the hdd and memory cactus, and the only other thing that comes up by doing this is that the floppy is not detected.

If it's not getting past the POST then a restore disk won't do you much good because it;s not getting far enough to make use of it. If the memory stick is 64Mb, and it only counts 56Mb before freezing then I'd suspect that :(
