CPU Upgrade question

So recently I was given an older computer from a friend and I thought it would be great practice to do some switching out parts and dp some upgrades. The following are the stats:

MSI K7T Turbo 2 6330 v5.0 mobo
AMD Athlon 1050 Mz CPU

So anyway what I want to do is switch out the CPU with a faster one. I recently picked up an Athlon XP Palomino 1800+ for a song and a dance and since I don't have a lot of exp. with this I was wondering if there were jumper settings that I would need to deal with or would it be as simple as just installing the new CPU? Looking forward to reading any responses and learning new things...thanks!

shouldnt be any jumper settings but there will be some bios settings if its not set to auto. Swap out the cpu's and see what the cpu is running at. If needed you can adjust the FSB from bios.

I understand the whole fsb bios setting thing but what if the bios does not display a section allowing me to setup the CPU such as Softmenu III from Award? I'm a newbie so please have patience.

the bios will no doubt have the options u need. It wont have soft menu III, not the board you posted a link to anyhow but you will have the ability to set clock speeds although i dont think u will have to change a thing. Those 2 cpu's should run the same fsb speed and everything else will be auto and work itself out.

Liljim I believe you. I believed you the first time you told me I wouldn't have a problem but just for the sake of knowledge I was checking the bios on another pc of mine and could not find how to access anything related to the cpu and I'm not a big stranger to the bios screen either. Hey man let me take the time to say thanks to you and the others here at this site for helping me attain the knowledge I have since I have joined, it's all greatly appreciated.

p.s Is there a book or website you would reccomend that I can get down to the nuts and bolts about these things so that I can teach myself? I'm currently going through the Meyers A+ book, sixth edition, but it doesn't give much as far as specifics even though I have learned a whole lot so far.

Well first the motherboard I was asking about is not branded but I did find the settings. I should appologize for asking about another mobo when I should stick to the mobo and CPU at hand. So here's the specs on my mobo:http://www.msicomputer.com/product/detail_spec/K7Tturbo2.htm

I just installed my new CPU and CPU-Z is telling me the core speed is 1149 but the specs say it should be at 1533. Now if I need to adjust the fsb settings I am thinking it must be located in the Frequency/Voltage Control area of the bios. Mine says the following:
CPU Vcore Select Default
Auto Detect DIMM/PCI Clk Enabled
Spread Spectrum Modulated Enabled
Clock By Slight Adjust 100
CPU Clock Ratio Default

Now under "Clock By Sight Adjust" it says:
Min= 100
Max= 132

Key in a DEC number:
I figured from what the CPU specs say that this should be set to 133 but the Max= number says 132 so I am confused about this.

The other thing is under "CPU Clock Ratio" I should set it to 11.5 correct? Thanks again!

100 X 11.5 = 1150 which is where its running now

133 X 11.5 = 1529.5 which is where that cpu should run.

@ 132 its going to run at 1518 which you will never know the difference. Bump it up to 132 and leave everything else as is. The 11.5 multiplier is locked in that cpu and u couldnt change it without some modding thats not worth doing so default is the best setting in that case.

Ok here's the new situation. I went ahead and put it at 132 and the pc still only read 1150 GHz so I checked the multiplier and it read default so I adjusted that to 11.5 and it still reads 1150. What I noticed while making these changes was it took longer for the pc to boot. Everything is set back to what it was and the pc seems to be booting at the speed it was before. Now I'm thinking of pulling the cpu out and re-checking to make sure I was sold the correct model! What a headache this is, I mean the work is easy but I want this behind me.

Well I pulled the CPU and everything checks out, it is an 1800+ so now what?

amd athlon xp palomino 1800, the settings i gave you are right for that cpu. Set it back, boot, right click my computer>properties and see what windows sees it at and not cpuz

looking over all the older versions of amd 1800+ chips, there were some mobile ones (designed for notebook but same socket) that ran settings on fsb 100 and 15X multiplier.

if u pull the chip again, theres a part number on it that can be compared . Make sure were setting up the right cpu.

Thanks again Lilijim I appreciate your assistance. As I said earlier I checked it and it's exactly what I thought it was an 1800+ Palomino desktop cpu. If by part number your saying this( AX1800DMT3C) that's exactly what's on the chip. Also When I boot the pc I can see on the initial boot screen that it says 1150 GHz and also under my computer>right-click properties> it says 1150 GHz so I am completely baffled by this. One thing I didn't know is that notebook cpu's can be compatible with desktops in some situations so thanks for that info Liljim. What can I check next?
