According to the packets they are both 256 so I should have 512.
I have tried swapping them round and trying them one at a time - but the machine only ever reads as 256 total - whether thats with one or both sticks.

Some MOBO's require a specific order for installing Memory sticks.
Should say in the manual how to install more memory.
It will boot with just the one stick...and it shows the 256MB??
Try putting the NEW stick in Bank"0",with nothing else, see if it boots and Detects the 256MB stick.
If it does, shut down, put the old stick in Bank"1" ... see if boots,if it does, see if the full 512MB is being displayed.

Also what is the make and model of your PC?

Total amount of RAM counted is 256MB.

The mobo manual does not specify a particular order in which to install RAM.
I am sure I have tried various combinations previously, and each stick only shows 128MB when installed. However, when I first purchased and installed it, it did show 512MB total.

Last night (when I finally managed to boot up) I downloaded several updates from Microsft (just so the machine was as up-to-date as it could be). Now the graphics have gon a bit strange. Any web page containing a Flash animation, the Flash animation is blinking like crazy. Even the emoticons are going crazy here. I have checked the display driver and it as it should be.

As you can imagine, I am so perplexed/annoyed/frustrated. I can feel a FORMAT coming on.

I have 2 256MB sticks.

I'll have to check exactly what happens when I install 1 stick only - but that means powering down the PC........

oh no......

I'll be back.

Later.......

Maybe much later.
