CD-Rom Drives gone AWOL!

Hi, can anyone help with this problem?

I have two CD drives in my machine, one CD Rom, one CD-RW. (labelled D: and E:) Today they have both gone missing! They are absent from MY COMPUTER, and from the device manager and I am unable to open either of them from START>RUN. When I place a CD in either drive, Windows tells me there is no CD drive installed. It's as if they don't exist! This has come right out of the blue with no previous problems. I am running Windows 98. any ideas?

Does your BIOS register the drives when you boot up?

Hi

BIOS wasn't registering the drives, but I have solved the problem. I opened the case and disconnected the IDE cable and then re-connected it. when I re-booted, the drives had miraculously returned. Of course, I'm none the wiser as to why the problem occurred in the first place, fingers crossed it doesn't happen again. Thanks for your reply.

cables get oxidized thin layer of rust, re-seating them usually takes care of the problem
