Portable Drive Help

I have a external hard drive that i use to back up data. Latley when I copy data to the drive I get a write protected message. How can I remove a write protection off this drive.
I have only used 250Gig of the 500Gig of the drive. I have scanned for virus, removed data, and eventually reformated. I can't seem to figure it out.
can any one help or give me tips on what to look for.
