I'm not too sure I understand what you've tried, but basically you are saying you have a machine with no network and no CDROM & you want to install windows - is this correct? You have a few options - the 2 easiest ones are to boot from a win95 boot floppy, and type 'sys c:' to make the hard drive bootable. Then either transfer the hard disk into your other comp & tramsfer the setup files onto it, or temporarily put a CDROM in the old machine & copy the files onto the hard drive.

The only other option is to grab a null modem (serial to serial connection) and use an old DOS version of laplink to transfer the files from your comp to the old one across the serial cable.

The old machine doesen't have a cdrom so I wanted a alternative route to install windows. I don't have an external cdrom so I need a way to install it from the hard drive. Every cdrom (95 and 98) that I had I tried to copy to a directory on the hard drive through a desktop pc failed. It would get almost all the way through and encounter an error, mostly drive is not accessable retry or cancel, and it would not continue past that point. I then tried them all on a different computer (newer) with the same results. So I read some more about dos. I read that if you boot off the boot floppy with the os cdrom in the drive and use xcopy or copy to copy the files to a directory on the hdd. This didn't work either as Several files did not get coppied because they had disk read errors on each of them. So my question is how do I get the files on to the hdd to install from there?

Ok I got a win98 se disk to copy with no errors. The only problem now is going to be the upgrade. Isn't win98se an upgrade cd? I mean dosen't there have to be an windows os on there to begin installing win98se?
