MSCDEX ????

Postby ColaBoy » Sun Jul 06, 2003 5:20 pm

I'm trying to set up my DVD player which used to run fine under Win 98.I downloaded the latest ATAPI file setup thing but when I run it says,
'There is no MSCDEX.EXE.Copy it to the boot drive from the DOS disk.Where do I get MSCDEX from?
This all came about because everytime I try to run a DVD I get 'Unsupported format in drive F'. Now this is pretty strange coz it was working a while back.

Boy I just 'love' computers!!! :(

PS love the new colour format! ;)

Normally you wouldn't load mscdex when you wanted to use a CD under windows - however if you want to try loading it, have a look in the file 'autoexec.bat' (use notepad to open it) and see if there is a line containing 'mscdex' with 'rem' before it. If there is, remove the 'rem' and reboot. (background: rem stands for 'remark' & makes windows ignore anything on the line after it).

Well that seemed to help install the drivers, the only problem now is that when I load a DVD into the drive a get a message which says 'Unsupported format in Drive F'
Do you reckon my drive is screwed,it plays CDroms and audio discs okay though?

if you bought a dvd drive ... it should have came with a floppy disk (a:) .. the .exe file your pc is trying to find that isnt present most likley need to be uploaded to your hard drive from the floppy disk (a:)

Otherwise tryt searching for an alternitive sorce for downloading the update . it is possible that when someone went to Zip the files , that they excluded one.

Nethign else you see/notice about the problem inform me so i can possiby determine a better solution.

I did have a disk but it was for Win 98 etc so I dowmloaded the lastest ATAPI file from the web site, see previous postings as to what happened after that!
Strange these though.I removed the device through the device manager then got Windows to look for it and reinstall it.I tried a DVD and it worked fine. After rebooting though the problem returned and my pc wont recognise any DVDs. :?:
