I'm having a problem connecting my external scsi cdrom drive to the ext. connector on the adaptec 2940 controller. The pc boots it goes trough all the scsi devices including the cdrom than it just hangs, no matter what free address I assigned it. I check the devices trough the ctrl A setup and it sees it fine. I checked and replaced the ext. scsi cable (4ft), I set the term on (dip switch) no change, I removed the cdrom drive (Plextor12x10x32) and replaced it with (8x12x24) works fine. I took the cdrom drive in question to work and it works fine. It just will not work on my pc. ANY IDEAS

2940's have an upgradable bios.. you could try that.

Are there any other devices on the chain? If there are see if it works with this drive as the only attached device... if this is the only device, try putting both drives on at the same time.

Have you tried the term power jumper? I've seen settings where that stupid jumper makes a whole chain crash.. and other places where it HAD to be on...

if it still doesn't work, send it to me, I could use it :lol:

I have 2 internal scsi drives ID 0 and 1 and an older external Plextor 8x12x24 cdrom writer ID 5 (term off), with this combination everything works great. When I add a faster Plextor drive -rw ID 6 to the external chain and (term on) , the pc will not boot, it hangs right after it display the new cdrom drive. I have upgraded the adapter bios some time ago to the latest (2.20). The only thing I did not do yet is to upgrade the firmware on the 12x24x32s cdrom. If it still doesn't work I may take your suggestion, may be swap it for a dvd rw drive. :lol:

I had a customer who needed a new HD today, their old one was loosing sectors bad. The old drive got recognized as a 40mbps bus, but the new one was getting recognized at 80 for some reason even though it was the same brand.. the adaptec card would show the ID's of the drives, but then lock the system hard.

I found an option in the SCSI bios to slow down the drive assigned to that particular drive ID.. they were restorign the backup when i left, and everything seemed great.

Not sure if that would help you or not, but it could be worth a try so you can have both of the external drives hooked up.
