:P Hi

Im running amd64 3400 on k8v asus motherboard 1gig crucial ddr400 ram
im using the cpu probe to get the temperature of the cpu under heavy load. i.e video encoding or gaming i get a temperature of 52 degrees Celsius. What is the max temperature for this chip?

Also on my search for an answer i found multiple forum posts saying that if you were to replace the heatsink and use another with different thermal grease not from amd it would void the warranty. Is this true?

Thanks

I have no answer for the max temperature, sorry, but your other question about the thermal grease, yes AMD voids the warranty if you use anything other than Shin Estu G 749.

Thanks for the reply

I read the link you sent. It reads "For permanent installation AMD only recommends using phase change material with the heatsink/fan. No thermal grease is recommended for anything other than temporary evaluation purposes"
So i have been thinnking about installing a new copper heatsink. SLK-948U appealed to me.Am i reading this correct and by your own judgement would I then not need to use the grease and just install the heatsink over the cpu with the fan?

I personally always use thermal grease, warranty void or not.

Artic Silver has a good reputation in the overclocking community for cooling, may want to look into that. The max temp should be around 70c so 52 under a load should be running pretty good.

By phase change material.. they mean that square patch of bubblegum that AMD coolers all come with..

This was only done because so many people burned the early Athlons out by installing heatsinks with NO kind of compound at all..

The main reason AMD do not advise using thermal grease is because so many people end up putting WAY too much on..

I use Arctic Silver on all my athlons.. and have done so since my very first T-bird 1200.. and I'm still using the same 2g tube of Arctic Silver paste.. that includes several changes of heatsink on 3 different machines.. should give you some idea of how little you actually need..
