I was wondering if anyone could tell me how I can tell what temperature the cpu has to reach for thermal throttling to kick in and whether cpu performance can be affected much by it.
At the moment, thermal throttling is set to 50% in the BIOS.
My normal cpu runing temperature after the pc has been on about 15 minutes is approminately 15min is around 50degrees celcius...is this enuf to enable thermal throttling?
If it is I want to turn it off but im afriad that the cpu will overheat and be damaged as I only have 1 cpu fan and no case fans...wot would be the best thing to do?
I have a Athlon XP 2400+, 768MB pc2100 DDR RAM, NForce 2 400 moboard and am running win XP PRO

Im not familiar with "thermal throttling" and the correct setting but i can tell you that you really need some case fans..50 degrees is a bit high for a "normal" temp,it should be in the low 40's at idle.I have a Athlon XP also which usually starts acting up at 55 and will hang anywhere from 57 up.I generally idle at 40-41 running 4 case fans. Its not likely that your going to damage it unless your getting temps well over 60 but you still need to be running cooler.

AMD cpu's can operate effectively up to around 70 celcius.. but obviously the cooler the better.. does your bios not have an option to set the level at which thermal throttling occurs??
The main problem isn't the temperature of your CPU... but the effect that will have on the temperature of your system overall.. blowing warm air around a case obviously has an impact on your system temperature.. which is much more susceptible to hangs at temperatures as low as 40-45 celcius...

with all due respect..

The maximum die temperature of the AMD Athlons is 90-95 celcius.. I have seen processors performing perfectly happily at 70 celcius plus.
On most AMD motherboards, thermal throttling is set to take place between 60 and 75 celcius.. usually this is adjustable.. but is obviously different on motherboards designed for Intel chips as these run much cooler than their AMD counterparts.
