Compaq Presario hardware conflict

i am working on a friend's 5-year-old or so presario 7360. he was having a bunch of problems with it so i backed up his data, noted what hardware he was using, formatted C: and installed windows98 (did NOT use compaq restore CDs).

after installing win98, system settings was showing a resource conflict between the ACPI BIOS device and modem enumerator device. his modem would not work until i was able to find a memory address setting for the modem enumerator that cleared the conflict for the ACPI BIOS device. after that, the modem worked fine.

my problem is this. my friend took the dang thing home and swears the conflict is back and his modem won't dial out again. what should i do? i already know reinstalling the OS doesn't clear the conflict. would a BIOS update sort this out? what does the ACPI BIOS device in win98 do anyway? it cannot be disabled that's for sure. why would the memory resource setting for the modem enumerator revert back to a setting (maybe the previous setting, maybe not) which conflicts with ACPI BIOS?

i'm pretty sure someone years ago updated the BIOS before installing winME

i browsed compaq.com but could not find any drivers for system devices such as this, only sound, video, modem, etc. drivers.

thanks for any and all help!

ACPI basically allows windows to control power settings, as well as plug & play settings - overriding the BIOS if need be. It may be that windows has simply reverted the address to what it wants automatically. You coujld try setting it back again, and seeing if it sticks? It can be a pig when windows wants to stick a device on an address you don;t want it to!!

thing is, win98 won't let me change ANY of the default settings for the ACPI BIOS device, only the modem enumerator. and, even if i find a workable memory address for the enumerator that solves the conflict, what's to say it won't revert to a conflicting setting like it did before?

since the driver for this device may be at fault, maybe a solution lies in the compaq restore cd's since the PC was shipped with 98. if i knew the motherboard manufacturer i could download drivers directly but i can't find any product name or model number printed on the motherboard for the life of me.

don't have any exp. with hardware conflicts so thanks very much for your help!

Well.. you have several options..

1. Turn ACPI off in the CMOS Setup..
2. go to compaq's website and enter the serial number.. it should tell you the original specs of the machine.. which might help you find more suitable drivers
3. ensure that you have the latest chipset drivers installed.. if it's a presario it will probably be an intel chipset.. but check this first.
4. Ensure that you are running 98se.. and not the original 98.. a LOT of bugs were irioned out between those two.

If you go to viaarena.com, you can grab the hyperion 4-in-1 drivers. These are via's all-in-1 chipset, AGP, IDE & INF drivers.

Here's the drivers you need, there's also a rompaq (bios update) for that machine.

Choose your OS

or go straight to

The modem drivers alone could possible help with the conflict,i just ran across the same problem on a compaq notebook.
