finishing a computer

I've been building a comp so that I may play the next generation games come out, and, well, they're upon us.

Config
asus a7v 333-x
athlonxp 2200
radeon 9800pro
512 pc 2100
XP Home

Well I have been building comps for awhile so @ least getting the thing put together and running is no prob. However, I see all the gaming boutiques constantly stating, "tweaked for gaming" "we get every ounce of power out of your machine"

Is this just a sales marketing ploy, or are there really things that I may tweak in the settings somewhere to maximize the performance on my computer???

Sounds logical

I'm not really talking about overclocking per se, but I have heard of some programs that can give a modest increase in performance on the video card, by turning up the clock speed a bit. I would be willing to try this, I feel I have ample cooling, But the original thought still lies in possibly some tweaks in the OS or DOS\

thanks in advance

thank you for your response, however, what about tweaking anything in windows, like increasing the size of the swap file?? I'm still a rookie @ computers, but I have heard that making tweaks in your system can boost performance signifigantly...

thanks in advance

There are several things you can do - for the swap file, you could make it a permenant size so that it doesn't get fragmented as much as if windows changed it's size every so often, however the days of tweaking every last ounce out of your system have (IMHO) gone really. I find that the defaults in winXP are actually excellent. The biggest performance changes I've ever got have been from tweaking memory timings & chipset features in the BIOS, and from updating to newer drivers (particularly chipset & video card drivers).
