I was looking at someones pc its a dell d600 latitude and they somehow put a password on the hard drive so right after the post and bios screen it asks you for the password for the hard drive. How can I get rid of this? If I wipe out the hard drive I should be able to get rid of it right? but if this password is bios related like the password you can put on the bios then could i reset it by taking out the cmos battery? I have never encountered this before so it is a bit baffling. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

You can send to to Dell--and they will try to determine if you are the owner or not. You are dealing with an anti theft device. I have dealt with this on two occasions and both "owners" decided not to send their unit in.

I've seen replacement chips advertised for $75. You need to know the location of the chip, a solder sucker and a little skill to install a new one.

Just replacing a hard drive on a laptop can be a real nightmare, I can't imagine trying to unsolder a chip off of the motherboard and put in a new one.

Well thanks for the link cactus even though we dont have the bios password problem but I see where you were going with that one. I am sure I could use that link in the future. thanks again :) Well icecube thanks for the reply I am sure this person owns the laptop but however doesnt want to pay alot of money to get this reset although he was the moron who cant remember the password. So do you think if I replaced the hard drive or formatted it that would bypass the security. The reason I havnt tried it yet is because the cdrom is broke and I am waiting for him to get a new one.

thanks

Well I have searched now for two days and the best I could find was call dell. They have a master password to get into the hard drive so once I put it in it disabled the hard drive passwod so I am good to go.

thanks
