A comp story of cooling.

Postby Mark121 » Mon Nov 22, 2004 3:56 am

:) To begin I wrote this because when I first made my computer 6 mouths ago I didn’t know anything
on comps I just thought that computers just ran hot but when I went to webs sites to search the right
temps for the CPU I’m using and saw good temps for my AMD 2200+ at least 40 Celsius. My AMD was running at 55 Celsius hot! And case 48 Celsius I needed a way to cool it down.

First I did some research on Pc cooling on google got very good sites, Some of them said to get fans
to cool comp other said to replace the stock thermal pad with thermal paste so I went to my local PC
Club and bought ARTIC SILVER 5 changed the thermal pad but I noticed that my heat sink had 4
Screws wired I thought to my self I thought the H/F was a solid piece of metal I got a screw driver
And took them out it had this white goo on it I replaced that goo with ARTIC SILVER 5 and put the Screws back

Second thing I did is I got 2 fans 1 bought at Pc Club and the other fan was from my friend’s dead
XBOX the big fan in the back. XBOX actually has 2 fans the big fan to cool the CPU other cools down the GPU.

I used the big XBOX fan in the front of the case as intake fan, the other fan I placed it on the side of The comp blowing air on the CPU.
The XBOX fan Has a high CFM. On the XBOX it runs at 7 volt on the comp it runs 12 volt .
Okay now I had 5 fan 1 on the PSU 1, one CPU H/F, 1 in the front , 1 in the back, and 1 on the side.

Last thing I did is added small heat sinks on my video card’s ram and bought 2 rounded IDE cables
To increase air flow and used electrical tape to round all my other cables and cable ties to bundle The cables.

After all of these modifications I got 40 Celsius running halo pc for 2 hours and case temp was 30 Celsius good temps in my book. :D

THANKS FOR READING MY ADVANTURE ON COOLING .
SPECS Foxconn KM400 M/B, AMD 2200+, 512 MB PC 2700, 80 gig WD 7200 w/8 MB buffer, ATI 9600 128 MB, DVD-CD-RW Combo Drive and Windows XP Home w/SP2.

Next time I have money I’m going to upgrade my comp to 64 bit M/B AMD 64 3200+ and just Maybe a Nvidia 6800 GT if I have enough money.

I used the Arctic Silver 5 paste and got almost 10C cooler. I average about 5 cooler. Its good stuff.

Thanks for sharing your story. Sounds like you need to start saving your cash.
