Just built a new PC and used my 40G hard drive from my other PC whose onboard ethernet failed. i couldn't get some large files off so didn't want to reformat it. When powering up for the first time I get a 'stop error' that tells me there's some problem with the drive (virus, etc) I get the feeling there's really nothing serious wrong since it was working fine yesterday. Is there a way to get past this error? What is the basis for it?

How far do you get when you turn on the computer? When does this error occur? (After the bios startup? Loading Windows? Immediately when the computer turns on?) Please expand your query so we can help you better.

If your running XP or Windows 2000 you can't just take a hard drive out of one machine and put it in another, unless you have the same MB and cards.
What you have got, is a one hour install to run.
Put in the XP cd and boot up -->choose a new install to the same drive. It will search and come back and say that it found an operating system. At that point you get a repair or install option, choose repair.
What the repair does, is re enumerate the drivers and the SIDS for your system.

Yep,that's the kind of thing I expected to hear. It's win2000 pro. I'll do what you suggest, that's probably the problem. thanks for the quick response.
Update: The diagnosis was correct, the solution however did require a new install. That was probably best in the end anyway, considering all new hardware. Thanks again for the info.
