Detecting Slave Harddrive, win 98, Dell P3 500Mhz

Postby mikepatton32 » Sun Dec 19, 2004 5:25 pm

A friend of mine has a question, he got a Dell P3 and has bought an 80 gig hard drive to use as a slave, it shows in the BIOS as secondary, when windows boots up its not showing in my computer. It is showing in Control Panel but it has no drive id assigned to it, how does he assign an i.d so he can format it, im assuming it isnt formatted? Maxtor hard drive.

Thanks

There is more than one way to do this:

1. is Maxtor’s hard drive installation utility (the easiest way I think)

2. Assuming this is Windows XP, Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive,
and then restart the computer. At the Welcome to Setup page, press ENTER.
If an existing Windows XP installation is detected, you are prompted to repair it.
To bypass the repair, press ESC.
All the existing partitions and unpartitioned spaces are listed for each physical hard disk.
Use the ARROW keys to select the unpartitioned drive where you want to create a new partition(s).
Press C to create a new partition by using unpartitioned space.

3. A with fdisk.exe on it. Boot from the floppy and fdisk the new drive and create a partition(s) as needed.
Reboot to windows and the drive should seen and now you can format it
