The screen resolution and colour quality remain the same as ever, at 1024x768 and 32 bit colour.

My refresh rate setting is set at 85hz, I have windows XP and so have selected the "hide modes that this monitor cannot display", and had the highest remaining selected.

You said: "...On my monitor settings it says that the horizontal size is 100%." Are you referring to the actual controls on the monitor itself? You have tried the settings, on the monitor that control horizontal position (sometimes called horizontal phase), horizontal size, vertical position, and vertical size?
Have you tried the "Reset" on the monitor?
What is the brand and model of your monitor?

Yes I am talking about the actual controls on the monitor itself. I don't know about a reset option, I've tried "recall" which made the size really small, but when I adjusted it out again it reached 100% horizontal still with the big black margins...:(

The monitor is a Hansol 730E.
