Windows XP does not do well when the motherboard has been replaced.
Basically you have three options
1. As you stated install XP to a different drive and then recover from old drive.
2. Use Windows recovery to repair the OS saving all installs but it might still flaky.
3. Format and fresh reinstall.
How to use the windows XP

If its XP or 2000, you have to re enumerate the drivers for the hard drive so it will operate with the new motherboard. This process removes the old drivers and installs the new ones.
Use your XP cd and boot with that, disregard the repair offer on the initial boot of the cd, the one you want comes after the f8 (I agree) screen.
go for a NEW install agree to the boilerplate with an F8 pick the same directory for the install.
At that point, it will come back at you saying that it found an operating system installed and will ask you if you would like to repair it--say yes. You might have to reactivate with microsoft It takes about an hour to run
Good luck
