about big HD's

I saw a couple posts here the other day about large hard drives, about 160 g but only something like 139 was being recognized. A tech buddy kind of explained what was going on with these people. Windows will only recognize so many gigs. Example: Windows will see 140 g. If a person installs a new 160g HD it will show up as seeing 139.??
He suggested the soluton is:
Update the bios for the system and format the HD using the format tool found on the website of the HD manufacturer. He said these are the steps they use in the pc store he works at and everything works fine.
Just out of interest, this buddy is a big gamer and told me that the only thing these really big HD's have done is make people lazy. He has 2 Western Digital 160 g HD's and has found with all this space he has begun to neglect his system. Meaning? Now he doesnt resize photos, rip music, reduce file sizes. He mentioned he now has about 10g of photos stored all over the place on his system and finds stuff he forgot he even had. What he said to me kind of made sense.

Is this something with windows then or a bios issue? I personally have never updated my bios, but my comp recognized my 160G drive fine. I think the message that needs to be sent to everyone, including me, is that we need to be more diligent in our driver updates.

From what my buddy told me some has to do with the O/S and some has to do with the MOBO. Its funny because for some people its a real problem and for others its slicker than goose s**t through a tin funnel.
As far as diligence is concerned is that like getting off your butt and doing some work for a change instead of playing all day?
Just as a point of interest in the lazy department. I often find myself making typos in a post and try to always go back and correct it. There are people who will make the typo, see it and they cant be bothered to go back and edit it. Are you feeling guilty now?

oh it rebounded on Lilpinkflower, it actually is "it is" lol. I found out why my Hard Drive doesn't show 160GB and that is because there is a partition. Anyone have a full version of Partition Magic so I can remove it??

I dont but can you not go to command prompt, type Format C: or D: what ever it is and just remove the partion? Seems to me I did that the other day and it worked.

I'm sorry, but I can't be bothered sitting there resizing loads of pictures to save 10% hard drive space. I would rather go out and buy another drive that sit there wasting my time. And after all, they are so cheap now, why wouldn't I be "lazy"? I have way more important things to do then resize pictures.
Any spelling or gramatical errors lilpinkflower?

Lol, IT IS true though. I have a 160GB, and when I take FRAPS Video's, I do not even compress them at all. I don't compress music or make pictures smaller. I have another hard drive on order, a 200GB this time, so I will have a total of 360GB of storage! I finished installing my Cool Drive 4 today. I can do monitor the following:
Temps:
Video Card
Heatsink for CPU
Case
Hard Drive
Fans I can control:
2 Exhaust at rear
CPU Fan
Intake on left side
HD Cooling Fan inside the Cool Drive 4
I gotta say, this thing is awesome, but there are SO many wires, I dont think there is any airflow in my case anymore, there are just wires everywhere and not 1 free inch of room. I tried to hide them but that does not seem to work so well in this case lol. I gotta get a Webcam so I can shw you guys pictures of my baby, that is the next thing!!
