HELP -my BIOS won't recognise my HD

Postby kingy » Fri Feb 18, 2005 11:47 pm

OK. So I just put together my new computer.
-2.8GHz P4
-512 mb ram
-256 px6600td graphics card
-Gigabyte GA-8l915p duo pro
-seagate 80gb ATA HD
-samsung DVD-RW

Now this is the first time i've built a computer and my BIOS doesn't seem to be able to recognise my HD. I've tried various combinations of jumper settings and IDE cable combinations and I just can't seem to get it to work. Does anyone know what set-up I should use with IDE cable and jumpers (please tell me if 80pin or 40pin IDE cables should be used as well). My HD seems to be working fine, I tried turning on my HD and holding it near my ear and its making noises and seems to be running fine.
I've tried setting the BIOS to LBA to detect my HD but it still won't.
Can anyone help me please?

You want to use 80 pin cables, they are naturally better then 40 pin :P

To solve your problem, it sounds to me like you didn't format your HD, am I correct? Answer if you did or didn't first, that will narrow some stuff down...

Unplug all of the IDE cables.

take an 80 pin IDE cable --blue to motherboard IDE 1 Hook the other end to the hard drive. Chose single for drive setting. Attach the molex power plug.

Boot up into the bios on the first screen, the ide settings should be on AUTO not NONE.

Then there should be a menu item to auto configure hard drive. click on that and search all 4--sometimes you can get IDE 1 mixed up with IDE 2. Some mother boards might label them IDE 0 and IDE1.

If you still can't see it, switch out the IDE cable--a 40 will work--80 is what you want to finish with. See if that helps for a start.
