Wierd Connectivity Problem

I am a SBC Yahoo! DSL subscriber. I have the 2Wire router with 1 Ethernet, 1 USB and WiFi.

My home network consists of an older Win98SE machine, connected via USB, and two Win XP laptops, connected with Ethernet and/or WiFi.

Sometime back, the Win98SE machine stopped being able to browse (IE and Firefox) consistently with DSL (one or two pages OK, but then "Page Not Found"), but dial-up worked fine. I tried everything and ended up reformatting and re-installing. It was all good for a few months, but now is doing it again!

(Originally, I also had a Windows 95 machine, connected via Ethernet that suddenly exhibited the same symptoms at the same time as the Windows 98 machine. I never got around to reformatting and re-installing that one, but it did work for a while with Ethernet).

I have tried:
Norton 2004
Spybot
Thorough Scandisk
Remove and Rebuild Communications
Remove and Rebuild Winsock and Winsock2

I dread having to reformat and reinstall again, particularly if I need to do it over and over again.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Welcome bbrafman,

I would suggest that you download HijackThis
you can find a link in the upper left of this forum under Helpful Weblinks.
Once you have extracted Hijackthis to it’s own folder run HijackThis and select
“Do a system scan and save a log file” now copy and paste that log file content back here.

Please copy this to Notepad and print it. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open windows when you are following the procedures below.

Press Ctrl/Alt/Del and "End Task" or "End Process" on each of the following:
(They may or may not be there)
ptsnoop.exe

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. (Turn it back on after this is repaired and you've rebooted.)
Close all other open Windows and have HiJackThis Fix:

O2 - BHO: Atomica BHO - {3392BD0A-A851-4AA4-86E0-4651006F9EA8} - C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\GURUNET SHARED\AGTBHO.DLL
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PTSNOOP] ptsnoop.exe

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:
ptsnoop

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Remember to reset these when done.
Delete the following Files/Folders if they exist:

C:\WINDOWS\ptsnoop.exe

Now, empty all your TEMP Folders, Temporary Internet Files Folder and then empty your "Recycle Bin", reboot and post a new HiJackThis log.

Hello, Gecko. Thanks for the help. Two questions:

1. I have Windows 98SE on this PC, so no Restore to deal with, right?
2. I do have a PCTel modem on the machine. Will messing with ptsnoop affect it? (I read on Google that there are 2 ptsnoop.exe's, a modem utility and a trojan. My Norton did not find any viruses...)

Thanks!

You are correct no system restore in Windows 98

As for ptsnoop.exe if you have a PCTel modem then do not delete it.
Be aware that ptsnoop.exe can be modified/replaced by the Trojan.
If that is the case you might have to reinstall the modem drivers if it is the Trojan.

Do you have a firewall installed?

The 2Wire has a firewall.

Then you should be able to control any attempts by a trojan.

So is the win98 system able to stay connected longer now?
