Memory Upgrade--Advice needed Please

Hello fellow Geeks
I am thinking about upgrading from 512 ram to 1024 ram and I am wondering how do I tell which memory sticks will be compatible with my system? Is there any way of finding out (without dismantling my PC) How do I find out which motherboard etc I have?.
Any help will be as usual Gratefully accepted
