freezing pc

For the last month or so my computer has been randomly freezing. I mean everything freezes. I'll be moving the mouse and all of sudden it will stop moving. alt-ctrl-delete doesn't work, nothing works. I've tried to wait it out but still no success. It dosn't seem like I'm doing anything that would cause it to freeze. I know its has nothing to do with my graphics card or anything bc i have replaced that in the mean time.

Any help?

Windows XP SP2
AMD Athlon XP 2700+
AOpen AK79D-400 Max

Do a temperature monitor and see if your PC is freezing from an overheated CPU.

I was facing more or less similar problem.
When you reboot after freeze, also look into the Event Viewer to see if it indicates any System or application errors, around the time it went into freeze. If so, that failure might be causing the freeze.

In my case my PC used to freeze on a controller error on \Device\CdRom0 and used to recover from it after hitting the CD eject button from the physical drive!!!

patkim,

i think mine might be related to my dvd burner. after i saw you said that i though that could be the prob. next time it froze i hit eject on the dvd drive and the comp unfroze.

how did you fix that?

i have been having other problems with the drive.

So seems like you have a similar problem….mainly related to the Disk device on IDE channel, be it CDROM or DVD burner etc.

Also check what is logged in the event viewer.

I changed the IDE cable on my CD device and after that it has not gone into freeze yet.

Hi i had the same problem but it was with my Ps/2 ports on my motherboard. I thought it was windows until i reinstalled 3-4 time. I replaced my motherboard and now it works fine, no freezes since.

Hope this helps.
